- SURA's footprint has expanded in Latin America through its companies, whose businesses are present in eight countries in the region, where a team of nearly 8 employees delivers the trust and supports more than 28 million customers.
- SURA Group (a financial services investment holding company) and its subsidiaries Suramericana (insurance) and SURA Asset Management (pension savings and asset management) share a distinctive way of doing business and are committed to continuing to contribute to the development of the region through their businesses and through the SURA Foundation, with its commitment to art and culture.
- As part of the anniversary celebration, the exhibition "We Are Company" will be open to the public until April 2025 at the Suramericana Art Gallery in Medellín.
December, December 12, 2024. A visionary group of 36 companies and 151 people founded the Compañía Suramericana de Seguros (now Seguros SURA Colombia) on December 12, 1944, in Medellín. This gave rise to what, 80 years later, is the group of companies that comprise the Sura Business Group: present in eight Latin American countries where it serves 44 million clients, including individuals and companies, with financial products, solutions and services.
After eight decades, Grupo SURA has almost as many employees as days of operation. Today, 8 people work to maintain sustainable growth with a long-term vision through their companies, as well as through the work of the SURA Foundation in various communities and territories in the region.
Eight decades have passed, building a path forged by a shared purpose: creating well-being for society and cultivating and maintaining the trust of millions of people and thousands of companies that have trusted SURA as their insurance company, retirement savings manager, and investment advisor. Through the SURA Foundation, we have also partnered with thousands of organizations to jointly contribute to social, educational, and cultural development in Colombia and the region.
Likewise, it is due to its broad and diverse shareholder base, as a company that has been listed on the stock exchange since 1945.
"We celebrate 80 years of history and a way of doing business that defines us at SURA, based on principles and committed to society and the environment. With that essence remaining, we now look to the future to continue growing sustainably in a region of opportunity and with the strengths of solid companies that are increasingly relevant in the lives of Latin Americans.", commented Ricardo Jaramillo, president of Grupo SURA, the holding company of the Business Group.
Inspired by history, SURA Companies continue to evolve and strengthen new businesses that respond to changes in the environment, markets, customers, and stakeholder expectations, in order to continue adding value sustainably and contributing to more inclusive development in Latin America:
- SURA Group: It will strengthen its position as a leading investment manager in Latin America in financial services, as a significant shareholder in SURA Asset Management, Suramericana, and Bancolombia, and will continue to deepen its role as a corporate citizen to promote initiatives and alliances that promote development and institutional strengthening in the region.
- South American, Insurance, trends, and risks company: will continue to deliver well-being and competitiveness in the seven countries where it operates with a significant focus on life, health, sustainability, and digital solutions. Furthermore, it will continue to consolidate recent investments such as VaxThera (vaccine production and packaging) and new business units such as BIVETT (animal welfare) and the Trends and Risks Unit.
- SURA Asset Management: It will strengthen its regional leadership as an efficient manager of pension funds for its members, while continuing to position SURA Investments as a regional platform specializing in investments and asset management, as well as its participation with Asulado in pension insurance and life annuities in Colombia.

Milestones of SURA's eight decades of history:
Growth in Colombia: Suramericana de Seguros began offering solutions in the General Insurance segment (1944), then ventured into the Life Insurance segment (1947). It also participated in the creation of Banco Industrial Colombiano (BIC, 1945, today Bancolombia) and diversified its portfolio with financial services through companies such as Sucapitalización (1958), Sufinanciamiento (1980), and Suleasing (1981). In 1972, the Company created the Fundación Suramericana (now the SURA Foundation) and launched the SURA Art Collection; in 1985, the SURA Cultural Committee was established.
Participation in the social protection system and national leadership in insurance. In the 1990s, Susalud (1991, today EPS SURA), Protección (1995, pensions and severance pay), and Suratep (1993, today ARL SURA) were founded. Corfinsura (1998, today Banca de Inversión Bancolombia) was also created, and Interoceánica was acquired (1997, today Seguros SURA Panamá). With the separation of the non-insurance portfolio, Compañía de Inversiones Suramericana (1999, today Grupo SURA) and Inversura (2006, today Suramericana) were born, which grouped together the insurance activities. Suramericana consolidated its national leadership with the purchase of Agrícola de Seguros (XNUMX).
Internationalization of SURA. Grupo SURA acquired ING's assets in the region, giving rise to SURA Asset Management (2011). Suramericana took its biggest international leap with the acquisition of RSA's assets (2015). Grupo SURA has participated in the Dow Jones Global Sustainability Index since 2011, reflecting the commitment to best practices of all the companies in the SURA Business Group. Likewise, the SURA Foundation was established in Mexico and Chile (2017).
Consolidation of SURA in Latin America. The COVID-2020 pandemic (2021-2020) highlighted the company's genuine commitment to the health of Colombians through mandatory and voluntary insurance. SURA Asset Management acquired Gestión Fiduciaria (2021, now Fiduciaria SURA). Suramericana invested in the creation of the biotechnology company VaxThera (2022), while SURA AM created Asulado (2023).
